Default What kind of oil?

I know it sounds dumb, but when I went to the auto parts store to do buy oil to do my oil change, they told me I needed a thicker type of oil for my car becasue I'm right around 90,000 miles. But when I did my oil change 3,000 miles ago they gave me a thinner type of oil. Now my dad says to run what the manual says but my 2000 Si didn't come with it. I'm dude for the change this week and want to get it done but didn't want to put stuff in my motor that's going to hurt it. the oil they sold me was 20W-50. If you guys can tell what I have to put in it it would be greatly appreciated. Also it would be nice if someone can tell me the difference of oil thickness and what is the purpose of them. Thanks.

Just run 10w30 synthetic, we live in florida, you dont need super thick oil.. its already too damn hot. When i had my teg/gsr hatch i ran Mobil 1 10w30 fully synthetic, worked fine.

The viscosity grade tells you the oil's thickness, or viscosity. A thin oil has a lower number and flows more easily, while thick oils have a higher number and are more resistant to flow.

kevin, dont use 20w50 in your b16, too thick
10w30 or 10w40 would be fine

Thin oil is for newer cars. thin flows and gets into every spot in your engine. THICK oil is for older engines, sticks better and gives more lubrication, but it is bad on new engines because it kinda weights them down and slightly reduces HIGH RPM power, not notisable thoug.

The best oil to run is actually 5w30 synthetic, with 90,000miles you would require 10w30 of normal oil but with synthetic it would be 5W30 which is the best choice. Quake and mobile1 are some of the best brands.
Also a Purulator Pure One filter is a good chice since it has the backflow guard, preventing the oil to flow out of it while you car is off, therefore minimizing dry starts. this is important on high milage cars that witch you dont know how the previous owner maintained it.
