Default Motor Oil Question

I know this has been covered many many times and been beating to death but I figured I would go ahead and take a poke at it myself .

Currently I am running pretty much a completely stock LS motor in my car. The mileage is unknown to me (its a swap) but I am pretty sure it is over 150K miles. What kind of motor oil is best for higher motor cars, and I dont mean just weight but non-synthetic, synthetic blend, or full synthetic. Reason why I am asking is because a friend of mine gave me a gallon of Mobil 1 0W-40 Full Synthetic and a gallon of Valvoline VR1 Racing 20w-50 motor oil. Which one should I use and why. Or should I go buy something else because these are too heavy? Let me know what you think.

The thicker oil is just a bandaid . Honda motors are well built and should accept the 10w-30 Full synthetic well , as long as you dont have any bearing tolerance issues . 0w-40 is not an oil I would run in my car ...

I would pretty much throwaway that crap he gave you, and go with Royal Purple, 5w30 or 10w30 (either weight is what is recommended, depending on climate, e.t.c.).

Mobil 1 is excellent as well. Royal purple has been proven to be a bit better though .

So I think I am going to go ahead with the Mobil 1 Synethetic 5W30 or 10W30, which is better suited for hot temps or hard driving? What is the best oil filter or atleast the best buy and which filter to stay away from.

OEM Filter FTW ..

All others are substandard . You should be fine with 10w-30 for whatever you will be doing in our climate ..

well before you go and do that you need to take in consideration... does it smoke? does it leak oil already, or does it burn oil... ususally if any of this occurs, it would be well suited for a thicker oil than 10w30... 10w30 is more for a newer motor that doesnt smoke or burn oil or have excessive wear. 10w40 is more for the car that is older but does not smoke or have excessive wear and 20w50 would be for the cars that are older and beat on (floor boarding it alot or racing)... putting a synthetic blend in a car that already leaks oil or burns oil will make the problem worse, its a proven fact. The best thing to do is, you know your car better than anyone, based on this information, what oil matches the use of your car. good luck - Jason

Ok well it has high mileage I guess you could say, but no smoking, no burning oil and no leaks... So I am guessing 10W40 then? Where do you get OEM filter from and how much? I am guessing Honda dealers right?

Correct ..

If your car has no oil leaks 10-30 will be fine
