Default ls fifth into a jdm ji (cable) tranny

thinking of doing this cause i am going to be in my tranny shortly. mainly i want to know if i am driving on the intrstate and go from 4th to 5th will there be a noticeable drop in rpm or will i not notice it. i know it will be better for me in gas mileage when cruisng. also is it the 5th gear that is needed and the final or is the final a ratio or a actual part that will be needed. thanks for you guys input, pro's con's.

also from a very knowledgeable source i was told i need those parts from a 90-91 ls tranny but at the time he said he was not 100% sure. what tranny do i need as a donor tranny? thanks.

main shaft and intermidiate shaft 5th gear. Two gears from the dealer cost about $125.

With my ys1 gsr/ls 5th I drop about 1,300rpm when shifting from 4th to 5th. 80mph @ 3700rpm.

Hope that helps you.

ok that sounds like you dropped just a little bit less than half of the rpm's. that sounds normal to me. so when you shifted did the engine beat changed drastically or you felt no major change. thanks.

engine " beat" did change. Top speed depends on your hp. I let out at 140mph and rpms were still climbing. It is a nice swap to do for fuel economy and longevity of engine on the road.

not so sure it will work on your J1. The 92-93 cable trannies have the same inside guts as a 94+ hydro.

thanks for the input, was asking because a very knowledgeable (as stated in my original post) person said it could be the 90-91 tranny that i would need but at the time he said he was not sure. by the way my motor and tranny is a jdm 90 "the year"
