why dont you want to remove the crank pulley?
dont waste time trying to cut corners, in the long run it will take you longer and you will have a shit job. do it right the first time and be proud of a job well done.

you have to take the crank pulley off! Not only because of the cover but because you need to get to the gear behind the pulley that holds the timing belt. On top of that it would be wise to replace the seal behind the crank pulley and any other seals exsample cam seal or water pump.

do the job right the first time! The crank pulley can be a bitch to get off, but it is worth it. Also, do the seals and water pump while in there as mentioned. Plus, on a daily driver, that belt cover is essential to keep the belt in good condition.

Even w/ air it is a pain sometimes. Mine took a breaker bar, 3 ft pipe on it and a ford bronco....

I have seen some people use a long breaker bar against the shop floor,
and ease out the clutch, but I don't recommend this unless you know how to keep the socket from popping off the nut.
I have seen people use a huge pipe wrench in the same manner......

Sometimes it can be jolted loose, when steady pressure won't do it.
I have seen people kick the breaker bar with the car jacked up and the brakes on.

I have an impact wrench if you want to bring it over to break it loose.-Bob 839-4281

Even w/ impact, mine wouldn't break free there have been 2 bolts that impact wouldn't get for me on a 10 year old car: CV nut and Crank pulley.
