well for starters the pistons are concave and there is almost no combustion chamber...that combined with the use of only 12 valves (1 intake and 2 exhaust) at low rpms creates a swirling effect that allows the engine to run with more air and less fuel...but at higher rpms this effect is mroe harm than good so the other intake valve opens and you left with somthing similar to a sohc 16v non vtec engine....anything else?

If I remember correctly in the Haynes manual I had it said that the E in Vtec-E was for Enchanced Performance. but alot of people refers to the Haynes manuals as crap

The E stands for Economy.

When it hits VTEC it actually slows down the revs and you get better mpg's.

thats because the si hatches are the heaviest ones and the vx's are the lightest ones....and after the "vtec" point the vx is basically just like a regualsr single cam without vtec.....that and the si's were prolly all stock with clogged air filters and bad drivers.
