Does the spedometer work at all? Try a friend's VSS, see if the spedometer works. FYI VTEC still works even if the VSS fails, check your oil pressure first.

Vtec is dependent on speed as well as oil pressure and rpm's so NO vtec won't work if the vss is totally shot.

If the vss fails then the ecu won't get the signal that you're going faster than 20mph and therefore vtec will not work. The vss should give a direct feed to the ecu and another one to the speedo, that being the case if your vtec DID work and the cluster didn't then I'd say the cluster was broke. However in your case since the cluster and the vtec isn't working that leads to the vss. if your oil pressure was off then you would get a cel for low oil pressure.

+1 on what Kender says about vss.
If you can pull the inner speedo wire, out both ends of the cable, it needs a new cable, but Keep us posted.-Bob

my speed sensor wasnt working because a bracket broke off of it and my vtec temp sensor broke too but just make sure the speed sensor is on right and the temp sensor is on right.
