Question About Back Fire
what did you do to your exhaust... anything at all? back fire usually comes from gas that was left over and burned up late. you need to look into getting a fuel pressure regulator like they said and getting your car tuned a bit. back fire occurs often, but most people have very restrictive cat's which dont allow you to hear the back fire. back fire isnt bad but means you are not placing the right amount of gas.
hmmm, I backfire like a mother under hard decel or at partial throttle while decelerating. I can almost do it on command.
Oh, and I SHOOT FIREBALLS!
I always had this question in my head too, I firgured it wasnt nothing real harmful but maybe a tune issue.

Could be lean backfires or rich backfires. Usually you can tell by the sound. Bad spark, vaccum leaks, sensor issues (are you throwing any engine codes) allo possible causes.
Lean backfiring is too much air in the fuel mix and rich is just the opposite.

a lean backfire would be called detonation. which is bad for any car. if you car is detonating, i suggest not to drive it hard.
what kinda of upgrades have you done to the car/motor?

A backfire can be caused by many things. GENERALLY you do not get rich backfires.
A backfire is caused by something igniting the left over mixture of gas and exhaust in the tailpipe. High egt's(or a lean condition) can cause backfires. Sometimes this can be caused by a leak in the exhaust pipe somewhere along the line. As generally there is no air in the exhaust to allow the ignition of the hot exhaust/gas mixture in the tailpipe.
So with out air, you cannot have ignition. Hence, you more then likely have a hole in your exhaust.
Something else I wanted to add. If you have a cylinder that is dead, or weak, this can cause backfires, because the air/fuel mixture never got a chance to ignite in the chamber - this is what you would refer to as a "rich" backfire.
