Default Polishing the Fat 5's....

So I figured I would jump on the bandwagon before it leaves...

Actually I have been wanting to do these for awhile now, just finally got off my lazy ass.

Had these near perfect Fat 5's sitting in the garage. The set that are on my car were damaged in the accident and these were to replace them.

Went down the old Harbor Frieght store

Cleaned them down with Greased Lightning (the purple bottle).

I cant use Aircraft Stripper, allergic to something in there, makes me break out even with gloves on. So I cut the OEM clear coat and the machine lines with 80 grit on my detail sander that I use on the valve covers I coat.

Then I sanded with 120 grit, then 240 grit. Followed by 500 grit and 1000 grit wet sands.

Used the sewn wheel and some tripoli and then the buff wheel and the emery. Followed up by some Mothers Aluminum polish on a buff rag.

The last pictures didnt come out great, but you get the idea. They shine really nice in person. I still have a few swirls in it, I think Im going to go get some 2000 grit wet/dry (they were out when I went last). When I get them polished up, Im going to paint the inserts and the back with the Duplicolor Wheel Performance Graphite/Gunmetal. I'll get some more pics when its complete.

Thanks guys!

I only have 1 so far and its not quite done. I have maybe 3 hours total in this one, but I was learning as I went. the other 3 should take less time now that I know what Im doing.

Im using a detail/orbital sander for the initial cutting/sanding (80-240 grit) then hand sanding the 500-1000 grit wet sands, its not that bad. think Im going to take it to a 2000 grit wet sand though.

Yeah, What He said......

I've been wanting to polish a set of Fat 5's for the longest time now, just wasn't sure how they would look on my Si.

Anyone wanna lend a set for a day so I can make up my mind on how they'd look?

Very Nice Job joebobclark, Lovin t3h last pic

Did some more work on them.

Masking for paint.

And a couple of side by sides. Not sure how I like the darker inserts yet. And I have to some more with the Mothers.
