Default Break in time

How long should break in time be for rebuilt engine? We used a "liberal" amount of Clevete bearing grease for build up on all bearings.

This is how i break in an engine.

1. initial startup....let run for 30min , shut off ...change oil.
2. start up again ....go give it hell/ dyno time.
3. change oil every 1500 miles.

but that is just me...and it works for me ....soem people see it differently though.

This is how i break in an engine.

1. initial startup....let run for 30min, dial in the A/F, checking for leaks, etc. , shut off. Use only non-detergent oil during break-in.

2. street tune with the following method to seat the rings: 2nd or 3rd gear, accel half throttle from 2500 to 6500, let off gas completely as to create heavy vacuum. Do this 5-10 times. Dial in the A/F during this time. Change oil and filter.

3. Heavy full throttle street tune/dyno time.

I have built probably 20 engines for people this way.

How I do it.

1) Start the motor. Look for any leaks.

2) After ten minutes hold the throttle at 2,000RPM for twenty minutes. Turn the car off.

3) Change the oil and oil filter.

4) As Jason suggested. Accel half throttle from 2500 to 6500, let off gas completely as to create heavy vacuum letting the engine decel. Do this 5-10 times.

5) Go have fun.

I even did this on my personal motor. Compression was 185 across the cylinders with one mile. After 1,000 miles compression was 195 across the cylinders. Compression tested the weekend before last COLD and compression was 190 across the cylinders.

my last motor i drove under normal conditions for about 50 miles and got a wild hair and bounced it off the rev limiter, it sttayed together amazingly, The way i was ttaught was to build it and drive it hard, but i know its not the best way to do it and back up the way alpha, cold-beer and 60-1EK do it
