It doesn't sound right to me. Is the oil on the block or the header, and just burning off? If it's coming from inside, it's not right. Especially if it gets on your passenger.

What he said.....could be a fluid leaking and dissopating on the header/exhaust.....

look under the car at the oil pan and see if its leaking at all? or when your car sits look under it?

(if it only happens when you drive for a long time its probably because its a SMALL crack or whatever, and when the oil heats up, it gets thinner so it can seep through whatever it is)

Maybe your oil filter isnt on that tight, or has a small pin hole in it. Ive had it happen to me one time.

since it went away i would say that when you rebuilt it, you got some oil/grease/other crap on the exhaust and it was just burning off. but keep an eye on yer oil level anyway, and make sure it doesnt come back and youll be fine.
