Default timing adjustment

ok I looked in the haynes manual for the motor I have and all it says is to adjust the timing so that the mark on the pulley lines up with the notch on the block and depending on what the sticker on your hood says depends on whether you use the red or the white mark. wtf.

I have and 88 crx si with a obd0 b16 that I am converting to obd1, and I will be resetting the timing to factory spec after I swap out the dizzy, the problem is my hood won't match the engine, and the god damn book doesn't say shit about setting the timing light for degrees btdc or any of that shit, it also says to jumper the service connector.....uh don't have one, I assume that is the same as flipping the switch to get the check engine light to read out the trouble codes on the obdo to obd1 veh.

so can anyone help me on hw the fuck to set the timing on this thing. I know how to hook up the timing gun and that it goes to #1 cyl plug wire. I know to get the engine to normal operating temp. what I don't know is what marks do I look at, and what setting do I dial in on the advance timing light. I seem to remember something like 23 deg btdc on intake and 16 deg btdc on exhaust but not sure. please help I am doing the swap tomorrow. thanks

are you doing ingnition timing? or cam? Ingnition is usually 16 factory which is a near dead center. Cam timing just need to find TDC and set it from there.

I do have aem cam gears but I am setting those to 0 deg., I need to adjust the ignition timing and or cam timing if cam timing is needed when you swap out the dizzy. I just want to make sure my timing is correct. and I thought for cam timing as long as the arrows pointed to each other it was good?

16 degrees. Leave the cam timing alone until you get it on the dyno. Set the #1 piston to TDC and check the mark on the cover with the crank pulley mark at idle. For jumping the connector, ground the #8 wire.

the mark on the .....timing belt cover? how the hell do you see it, its a tight fit? the book says there are 2 marks one white and one red which do I go by? and thanks for clearing up the correct degrees. the cam timing I was going to set to 0 so it is just like stock gears, the dude that did the swap put them a 3deg for whatever reason but did not dyno anything, hell I am still correcting things he didn't do on the swap.

for jumping the connector I was thinking that the #8 was the same thing but needed to make sure. I still think that the switch on the #8 is cool as hell. don't know why but I do.

white and red are the crank. White I think is BDC and TDC. The mark I think is right by your belt tensioner or very close to it. It pops out alittle bit from the plastic. It might be easier to remove the fender cover.
