Question Rear main oil seal ?'s

i've got a 98 civic HX

there has been oil leaking, and all signs are pointing to the rear main oil seal leaking.....
1. Can smell oil burning.
2. Clutch has been slipping
3. Carbon build up around the bell housing.

was told to check the dist. o-ring.... it loox fine

haven't checked the flywheel inspection cover for oil on the flywheel....

ok to the point.... i am planing on changing out the rear main oil seal this sunday...

has anyone done this before and can offer any advice?

does anyone think that this is a misdiagnosis on my part, in blaming the rear main oil seal on the leak?

replacing a rear main seal is a big pain in the ass, make sure thats the problem first. the only was to tell is to clean the area near the bell housing and trace it back to inside the tranny casing

can you think of any other seals that could leak, and cause the carbon build up aroung the bell housing?

its really just changing a gasket...you will need gasket sealer...but that about all...the hardest thing is seperating the transmission from the engine, if you can do that...your good to go.

Well are you leaking engine oil or tranny oil. If the leak is real bad and you don't notice your engine oil low it might be the left side drive shaft seal. Best bet if you are not sure is jsut to replace the drive shaft seals also when you do the rear main.

rear mains are easy. Replace your clutch while you are back there. Just take a small mallet and tap the seal in.
