To my knowledge, the CRV differential was used because the trans was CRV. Since the originoal concept was AWD, it was nescessary to keep the final drive ratios the same as to not stress the drive line components any more than they allready are.
Now that the car is RWD, pretty much any Diff could most likely be used but the CRV unit is already in there and seems to be holding up fine...

why not just turn the motor side ways to make it rear wheel, if you go to bushcer racing's site that is what they do to there awd talons but i am not sure what rear the use. Would the dsm rear work? If you look up Mike Simmon he made a ef with a s2k. First it was a DSM then converted to S2K. I like the K setup it sounds good costly but good. What about the civic wagon? Has anyone thought of using that as a base then beefing it up after?

Turning the motor sideways would work if Honda engine bays were about 10" longer. A 2G CRX bay is 23" long with radiator in place, while a D15 is 26" long with distributor in place. It would be easy due to all of the RWD honda transmissions laying around
The 4G block will bolt to a Starion and Mighty Max pickup (IIRC) trans.
DSM rear would work in RWD only application since the rear final drive ratio doesn't need to match the front final drive ratio, but by that token you could put a Ford 9" in there is you wanted (although you'd have crazy low gearing and 60MPH top speed....)
If you could find a 1:1 differential or something close, and bashed up the firewall enough for the motor to fit sideways, you could turn the motor 90* and run it off the splines for one side after fusing them together.
The AWD wagon would work, but that diff would shear itself to pieces if you so much as fart at it.
Basically, using all Honda parts and CRV diff is just easier. Braille may put out a unit better than the CRV one if their kit, when finished, catches on.
