Default combustion chambers and sprockets...

alright i am just a little curious. i was going through some old import tuners.... found an article... i have mentioned it on here many times (about a 94 prelude vtec N/A with 230.3 whp and 187.6 torque)... anyways i was reading about his mods and in the article it says that he had his combustion chambers welded and the ports were hand polished. what does this mean and what does it do? never heard of it before. also in the article it mentions fine tuning his spoon cam sprockets. are these cam gears or what?

Sprockets are cam gears. As far as welding a cylinder, i don't know if it was to emulate a closed deck, or it would have something to do with compression. And hand polishing sounds pretty self explanitory.

you weld into the combustion chambers on the heads and change the shape into more of an oval... basically filling in where there is no piston interference, then you smooth them down, basically reducing the combustion chamber size, increasing the compression ratio... i think DPR is popular for this
the hand polishing is just saying it wasn't done by a machine...
and yes, fine tunign his cams with the sprockets or cam gears as we usually call them.

Yea, that's what i figured, just seems like a sever pain in the ass way to raise compression, but i guess, why not get rid of wasted space.

nice info man. by doing this... welding the combustion chambers and having them hand polished (therefore raising the compression ratio) is worth it for a n/a set up? and how much you think this would run someone?

Well pistons do the same thing man, and it might actually be cheaper to do it that way.

Contact tom at portflow (portflow.com)
Or any local machine shop that you think you can trust.

Usually welding chambers is to repair cyl head damage.
It is also a method of bumping c/r

I personally would just mill the head & buy cam gears

if i did all of the above though... high compression pistons like type S pistons (raise compression to 11:1-1) or even more dramatic... 12:1 forged pistons... then have the combustion chambers welded and hand polished... and get skunk 2 cam shafts and gears. what is milling the head? and is porting and polishing worth it...? what gains could i reach by doing a port and polish head job.?

You realize you aren't going to be doing that on pump gas right?
