Default vtec problems

i was gonna buy a civic from this guy who said it had a bad cylenoid for the vtec so the vtec wasnt working. i didnt buy it i got a crx with a b17a1. lately my vtec either hops around like its skipping a beat or doesnt even hit. i know the car has a sticky valve but i dont know if that has anything to do with the vtec not acting right. i want to know if it is this cylenoid? and if it is or if its something else please help me. i need my vtec for the track event.

*check oil level
*check your filters on your vtec (there are two) one on top and one on the side) 3 10mm bolts on top by the solinoid.
*check if your throwing any codes on the ecu located on the passenger side firewall below the glove box.
*you can test your VTS by adding power to it straight from the battery. just a wire/gound to the Sol. plug. should here a click sound. Car on. It should either stall or idle really low if its working.
*I would check the spark plugs to.
