85-87 Si were fuel injected, the run of the mill 84-87 were not.

www.redpepperracing.com is a wonderful 1G CRX site.

I'd have started with one of the Si's and converted from pre-OBD fuel injection to OBD0 (swap a few pins, run 7 wires, need OBD0 dizzy and ECU) and run some boost on one. If you just want a little pep, the rpr boys will steer you toward D16A1 (86-89 Integra) or EW3 (85-87 Si) head with Webers... I'm not too fond of that route due to Webers giving you muddy throttle response and 10 mpg, and being impossible to start on a cold morning (I live further north than FL) but if you buy a nice cam you have the makings for a slightly hot retro-style NA car.

I made the EFI wiring harness for an 86 Civic DX to run an 89 Integra engine, it was one of the more tedious things I have ever done. We ran a Volvo 240DL fuel pump external to the tank. Had about $370 in the whole car, and after stripping it would run dead even with the then-new 99 Si.

stay away from a d series motor and put in a b18a/b motor with a b16 cable tranny... those are usually good combos

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.
