Sounds like you know what the solution to your problem is already. You need exhaust. Odds are, mine would do the same ghettofried thing if I yanked mine. Bolt up some exhaust and be happy once again.

The fire is unburnt fuel that is exiting your exhaust manifold with no cat to burn it up or piping and muffler to hide the flame part of it...The popping you hear at times from those with an exhaust is the backfiring muffled...

you most likely have unburnt fuel because you are running too rich.

Theres always gonna be unburnt fuel as the factory settings run around 10:1 A/F Ratio which is rich...And overlap plays a role in the unburnt fuel leaving the exhaust ports...Actually Unburnt Intake Charge is a way of making power on turbo motors and can aid in the scavenging effect in N/A motors...See the explosion causes the turbine to spool and the explosion also sucks the oxygen from the head towards the flame...There are actually Anti-Lag Settings on Standalone Engine Managements that opens the injectors when the exhaust valves are open...Not for street use at all...
