Chassis codes?

How does Honda choose what code for what chassis? Civics are what Im mainly talking about... ef, eg, ek, ep... wtf? Why the skippage? Why not do this sequentially? What is the secret here? Someone clue me in!

allot of companies skip letters that can be confused for numbers but I do not understand there suquences either.
