Can You Shoot a Moving Target?

When was the last time you practiced shooting at a moving target with your pistol? Gunfights are dynamic, close-range incidents that very rarely happen when both parties are standing still. Here is a great way to train to track and accurately hit a moving target with your pistol at typical combat distances.

This is called the Intelligently Controlled Targeting System (ICTS), and I first saw it used by Instructor Zero. Basically, the unit consists of a 10-foot section of PVC pipe with a 90-degree elbow on the end and a target affixed to a crossmember. Then you have a training partner move the target, slowly, while you shoot at it.

Train Safely

Safety is the primary consideration with any moving-target training system. We used UTM rounds to engage this target, but you could use a SIRT pistol, Laser Ammo or even an airsoft gun. I have seen this system used with live ammo but would suggest you start with something else.

One of the beautiful elements of this training target system is that during training, you can use the ICTS to force the shooter into a divided-attention training situation. If the controller begins to move in any direction, the shooter must follow to maintain a safe shooting situation and keep rounds on target. If you add a second or third ICTS, you can conduct training to engage “no-shoot” targets as well. That means the trainee has to make sure of what is in front of or behind the target designated as a threat. And check out that group on the moving target at 3 yards (gun camera video brought to you by the Viridian XTL).

How Will You Use It to Train?

The system is limited only by your imagination and the elements of safe shooting. You could build an ICTS system and run it in your garage with airsoft or BB guns. The goal is to get you looking at and engaging a moving target while maintaining situational awareness of your surroundings.
