Default Trust is built only when there is alignment between what a person says and what he o

BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER A story out of Montana caught my attention recently.

According to Fox News, "Montana Sen. Jon Tester, a red state Democrat running for re-election in one of the closest Senate contests this year, has campaigned as a big hunting proponent, sending out mailers to voters that show him on his farm with his gun in hand. But according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks records reviewed by Fox News, Tester hasn't had a hunting license in six years. He last had one in 2012 — the same year he was last on the ballot."

I'm typically not surprised when I learn that a politician — particularly one looking to garner votes in an upcoming election — has taken a particular stance in an effort to connect with as many people as possible. So in "Big Sky Country," where the wilderness is vast and hunting is indeed a way of life, it doesn't strike me as odd that a candidate would focus on something that is enjoyed and respected by the vast majority of the population.

But Sen. Tester seems to have portrayed himself as someone he's not. After all, it's hard to call yourself a hunter when the last time you held a license was, well, the year of your last campaign. Coincidence? Doubtful.

Fox News sent an inquiry to Tester's campaign, which "denied that the candidate has portrayed himself as someone who frequently hunts."

I'm not sure, then, what sort of message the senator was hoping to convey by holding a gun in his hands in his campaign flier. And I'm even more confused, then, by why he would say, "As we gear up for hunting season, Montanans know that hunting isn't just a sport — it feeds our families, and it creates lifelong memories with our kids and grandkids. Montanans are lucky to have some of the best access, longest seasons and greatest hunting in the world."

His use of "our" sounds pretty inclusive to me.

Bearing Arms calls Tester "a fair-weather friend to hunters and gun owners" and says he "holds up hunting as a shield, a way to pretend to be pro-gun without having to take a pro-gun stance. He doesn't alienate the DNC and the more rabidly anti-gun folks in his state, but he makes Montanans feel safe and sound."

To be honest, though, Tester's stance on firearms has been pretty clear. He "supported Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) push for an expansion of gun control that would violate due process" following the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016, Breitbart reported.

I mention this because it's important that we remember that the Second Amendment isn't about hunting. There are plenty of folks who hunt who don't support the Second Amendment, and there are plenty of folks who don't hunt who do support the Second Amendment. We mustn't misconstrue a candidate's — any candidate, from any political party — support for hunting as support for the right to keep and bear arms.

As Tom Knighton points out, we must be wary of those "who hold up their love of hunting as a shield against criticisms that label them as anti-gun."

It's also critical that we pay close attention to the actions individuals take over time. Remember: It's easy to make sweeping claims in the short term in order to appeal to the masses. But trust is built only when there is alignment between what a person says and what he or she does.

Take care and stay safe,

Tim Schmidt
