It is our most basic purpose as humans, to stay alive
We have always tried to survive. It is our most basic purpose as humans, to stay alive. Our primal instincts tell us to preserve our physical bodies first and foremost, then to preserve the bodies of our family members second.
Survival is such a basic, biological (and, arguably, boring) function it seems ludicrous to even use the words “modern survivalist movement.” Survival is not a movement, it’s a faculty.
Still, the terms “survivalist,” “prepper” and “prep” are somewhat new to our language. The term “survivalist” was not used until 1976. The terms “prepper” and “prep,” both stemming from the word “prepare” are even newer, not gaining popularity until the 1990s.
I have always identified as a survivalist, simply because this is my background. But even I admit, there was a time when big box stores such as Costco didn’t sell bulk survival food, and there are now numerous multi-million-dollar movies and tv shows (see 2012, National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Preppers, The Walking Dead, etc.) which have capitalized on what seems to a universal fear of a world-altering event.
Why all the seemingly sudden interest in preparedness?
A lot of the modern survival industry’s growth can be attributed to our current culture and what’s going on our world. The most recent spike in the business’ growth occurred during November 2012, which was the month in which President Obama was elected to his second term. This event clearly got a lot of people to think about living in uncertain times.
They weren’t wrong.
In February, 2015, then-President Obama urged Congress to pass laws limiting the amount of food and ammunition a citizen could have on hand at any given time. He was quoted as saying “These people preparing for a government collapse are the ones most likely to cause it.”
“The government is here to supply your needs, so there’s no need to have a 3-year food supply hidden in your basement,” said President Obama. “After binge-watching episodes Doomsday Preppers on Netflix, I see how dangerous and un-American these people are. In a failing society we all work together, and if you’re hoarding food, there’s less for everyone else.
No one should be hoarding ammunition, and I think anything more than 50 rounds should be criminal. I’m asking Congress to push through new laws, making it a crime to have more than a 30-day supply of food or more than 50 rounds of ammunition in your home. These preppers are more of a danger to America than ISIS, and they need to be stopped.”
Not everyone feels the way Obama and other democrats do, though. Many republican senators are quick to strike down the proposal, saying that prepping is something that should be the God-given right of every American citizen.
“Preppers are smart, they know history shows you can’t count on your government,” explained Ted Cruz. “I’m going to encourage everyone to have at least several years of canned food and bottled water on hand. Preparing to take care of your family is the American way, and the only way that will keep us strong in time of dire need. If Obama wants to talk prepping, he should prep for some serious fight on this issue.”
