Default Crime Could Come to You

[h=1]Crime Could Come to You[/h] By Kevin Michalowski // 11/03/2017

I often tell people during concealed carry classes, “You can often stay out of trouble if you don’t do stupid things with stupid people in stupid places.”

The meaning of that catchy little line is to remind people to stay out of dangerous places. But I see now that’s all wrong.

You cannot guarantee safety by staying away from “bad” neighborhoods or “dangerous” places. Of course it helps if you stay away from those, but don’t let your nice suburban lifestyle and your white picket fence (if you have those things) give you a false sense of security. Criminals are mobile and they might be coming to a street near you. Maybe even your street.

The American love affair with the automobile means we have roads everywhere, and anywhere there is road, there is a means for a criminal to go from where he is to somewhere people are not ready for him. Remember, criminals are predators. They look for prey that is weak or unprepared. Criminals want soft targets. All they need to do is steal a car and head for your neighborhood. Will you be ready when they arrive?

Residential burglary is a pretty common suburban crime. While the hard-working folks living in the suburbs are away at their 9-to-5s, burglars can often work unnoticed. But it only takes one error in judgment for burglary to become a home invasion. If you have a family member home during the day when most other people in the neighborhood are gone to work, encourage that family member to develop a security plan. All of my security plans include a firearm. Some of those plans include two firearms.
I carry a gun pretty much every waking moment — from the time I get out of the shower to the time I retire in the evening. That’s because I never know who might show up at my house and, if I need my gun, I expect I will not be able to call “time out” while I go looking for that firearm. A firearm is typically only a good defensive tool if it is immediately accessible. If you are more than three seconds away from your gun, you are unarmed.

The doors at my house are only unlocked as I pass through them. I lock the door when I leave and I lock the door as I return home. No one needs to enter my home without my permission. Yes, it takes a couple extra seconds when my teenage son comes to the door and is too preoccupied to take out his key, but I don’t care in the least. The door is locked for a reason. Locks slow people down.

If someone with ill intent comes to my door, I want more time to figure out what I’m going to do.

I live in a good neighborhood, but we still have drug dealers and burglars and wife beaters and drunks. And I tell people all the time, “You never know when someone will decide to do something stupid.”

If you are always ready, you don’t have to get ready when something happens. Stay ready.

SouthernMaine I just this minute remembered: I ran into a friend l hadn't seen for awhile. He was living in a different town collecting anti-gun signatures at the supermarket about 2 blocks from my home.

He already knew what happened at my house so didn't blame me for not signing, but still was firmly anti-gun. Soon afterwards HIS home was invaded --- and like l did, back in 1977 when my apartment was invaded in the town where he was now living --- he bought his first gun! I was now able to tell him he needed to learn how to use it, and practice with it, just to be able to use it, and also check the laws about using it. Not ironically, while that anti-gun ballot failed, and Maine now allows any citizen to purchase a gun, no strings attached, the laws on using a gun have become ridiculous.

Speaking of "you never know," a woman was killed at that supermarket not long ago, throat slit by a young female stranger while standing in the frozen food aisle. Someone jumped on the female with the knife, too late to save the older woman's life, but at least the attacker was caught. The attacker said she didn't know the woman she murdered, nor why she killed her.

SouthernMaine Crime is on the rise in Maine, as I came to know only too well when a gang of home invaders and vandals came to my door. I was among the many who mistakenly believed that I would be safe, because I don't drink or drug or hang out with dangerous people -- so how was I supposed to know that a gang who was living right next door would some day attack me and other home owners in my community and had already been doing this?

I still had a Walther .380 to carry when there was a need, someplace else, e.g., as a musician, I traveled far and frequently. I would not keep my gun at home by itself, so l pawned it, for safekeeping ---- and it was while doing this that my home was attacked.

This gang had me under surveillance and so did their partners, the local police, who were bribed to protect their drug and prostitution business. After the fact, I overheard a $600 cash bribe, during the first night of 3 attacks. It is not a mere co-incidence that there is no such thing as a victim/witness shelter in all of New England for home invasions.
The ultimate goal is to terrorize home owners out of their homes, permanently, in any way they can, then take over their assets and real estate. Meanwhile, they harass and interfere with all sources of help or support, including access to the courts.

All of this could have been avoided by NEVER being without my gun, and using it at a time of need. Then came the famous Rory Holland case, a prime example of what can happen when a law-abiding citizen has no USCCA insurance.
We used to have strip malls in Maine that were inviting real estate racketeering. Now it's casinos. And these rackets don't give a damn if your property is protected as a landmark or a natural resource.

Stone
I don't like to wear a gun in my house or when I'm working in the garage. I also don't like having to get in and out of my gun safe several times a day. At home I use a zippered Bible cover with a foam cut out for my EDC and spare magazines. (There are no children in the house, else it would get locked up.)

I can carry it from room to room or have it on my work bench in the garage with out having to worry about too many people even thinking about picking it up or noticing anything odd about it being on the end table. When I leave the house I holster it, when I get home I pop it back in the book cover. You still need to be aware of who is around, but it is really quite convenient. It does make for a slower draw but I figure the stupid people will make enough noise getting through the door to give me time.
