Yeah, the old Saturn EV1 was a huge GM research project. All the cars were leased, and all but a handful of them destroyed at the end of the gig.

The Leaf is for sale, but pricing has not yet been announced.

When are the diesel hybrids coming? Besides a fucking train engine?

That's a damned good question. A diesel engine would be ideal for a hybrid, wouldn't it?

Maybe it's just the US market's aversion to diesel cars? Looks like both Mercedes and Toyota have diesel hybrids in the works... but Europe and Japan will surely see them long before we do.

Pricing has been announced.

A bit pricey at $32k, but with all the tax incentives and such, it's doubtful that anyone will pay much more than $25k.

Of course, then you need a $2k charging station.

If the cost of electricity is half what it costs to drive a 30 mpg gas-engined car for 100,000 miles (should be much less than that), you'll save over $4k just in fuel, so that puts it on par with a high-end economy car for price.

All that said... it's nifty, but I ain't buying one.

you can get a 50% break on the charging station and the usual 7500 break on the cost of the car. If you live in cali or georgia there is also a 5000 break on the cost of the car as well. So 20K in georgia for the car and 1100 for the station turns out to be not bad.

I like how Nissan is claiming zero emissions.

How does Nissan think most owners will be charging their car?

Since most of the power in this country is still generated by coal powered plants we're just robbing peter to pay paul.

technically we are using whatever peter doesn't need to sell to paul for his own uses.

that and the environmental cost of producing the electricity is less than the car pushing out emissions from its tailpipe.

it doesn't matter anyway because in the end the market will come back to fuck us all...corporations are gonna make their money one way or the other...and it might be cheap electricity now, but someday it won't be.

^ that is exactly why

I wonder how this thing would hold up in traffic. Sure, it will go 100 miles, but what about sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for 30-45 minutes.
