Honda plans to take on Toyota prius with a Honda prius
Why does the new Honda hybrid look like a Prius? Did you read Zate's discussion above? Why does an F1 car look like an F1 car?
Uber-high-mileage hybrids are purpose built. If it's build to seat 4 people comfortably, be aerodynamic, and be as efficient as possible... it's going to end up being about the same size and shape as the Prius.
Interesting side note... I noticed at an autocross one day that my Yaris has EXACTLY the same windshield and roofline profile as several other economy cars... on that day, I was parked next to a Civic and a Mazda 3... it was like they were all built to fit the same template. I'm sure that has something to do with aerodynamics, as well.

ok so I am not on tr much but most of the hybrids that roll through my work place average 45-50 mpg. What would be so bad about making a 40-45 mpg hybrid that would bring the rest of the broke world on board. If they can make it appealing to the 16-25yr old age bracket and put the price under 30k, I think it would be marketing genius.
the prius will always be a big seller but if toyota had a sport looking (not sport functioning) hybrid, wouldn't they dominate the hybrid market and bring the next generation of car drivers away from the fuel inefficient sport cars?

some others that i'd throw out there for you (because I just did this recently) is the corolla, Camry hybrid, Civic, Civic Hybrid, Yaris.
i didnt like the Smart at all, drove weird and I felt like I could be killed at any time or that a big gust of wind might knock me over..
Loren on the forums here is getting 40+ MPG out of his Yaris, i am looking to get close to 40 with my civic this tank, corolla's regularly get over 40 and the Hybrids over 60. Any of them will more than halve your gas bill.

All that being said...if Dodge had made the Razor, it would be game over.

Bob, I'd really hate to see you buy a Smart, so let's discuss:
First, the US model Smart doesn't get 60 mpg. EPA says 33/40... with hypermiling, you MIGHT get up to 55-60 on the highway. (compare that to my Yaris that's rated 29/36 and can hypermile to 45-50... 38 city and 42 highway is doable by mere mortals) It's a cute little thing, and probably kinda fun to zip around in, and 40-50 mpg is nothing to sneeze at, but consider that it costs about $10k more than a Fit and fully twice the price of a Yaris... is it really worth all that? Oh, and it requires premium fuel to deliver its 13 second 0-60 performance... the Yaris will do 9 seconds on 87 octane.
IF you could get a Smart for its sticker price of around $12k, it would be (barely) worth considering. But, as long as they're fetching the premium price that comes with being new, different and limited availability... leave them for the rich trophy wives with a green streak.
And... IF you could get a diesel Smart for $12k... then you might have something.
