Default info for building up a 454

Hey guys, I just recently purchased a bare 454 block because I want to build an engine up on my own and I was just wondering if any of you knew of any books or wesites about how to build up your own 454? I know that it would be easier for someone to do all the stuff for me but anyone can do something like that. I want to do it all myself, or at least most of it so any help would be great. Thanks

There are more books than you can list for building up motors. What exactly are your plans?

well, I still want to use the car for street use so nothing over 800 hp or anything ... yet. Basically just a high performance street motor.

Okie Doke.

Gimme a run down on the car now.

Present motor.

Tranny.

Rearend.

I assume you want to build the motor for the 69 Camaro you have listed in your member id right?

well right now it's only got a 350 but it's sittin' at 404 hp

the rearend is a 12-bolt with 4.11 gears

and the tranny is just a turbo350 3-speed

but in time I do possibly want to change out the rearend to a ford 9", I'm not really too sure about the tranny yet

thanks for the welcome

Okie Doke.

First things first. Hit the classic Tech Forum on BADRAP.NET

Second get over to Summitracing.com and start looking for parts. My recomendation is that you get a set of forged pistons and somw H bean rods to start with. Then get the Edlebrock BBC heads and matching cam\carb\intake setup. this should get you started. Be forwarned that this is going to cost you about one third to half again as much for everything over a small block.

alright, I'll check into the parts but do you know of any manuals for instructions on actually building the engine?

I haven't run the car in the quarter yet, I don't even know if it'll even make across the quarter with it being a 3 speed with 4.11's lol

Two other things you will need to do to switch from SBC to BBC is change motor mounts and transmission bell housings.
