Question L 98 questions

does anyone here know alot about the L 98's that came in the camaro's and vettes?

i just had a few questions about them.....

like:

what type/material of pistons/rods/crank do they have ?

compression ratios?

how strong are they stock/ what kind of hp #'s can you realistically get with one of these on stock internals....... ?

are the stock heads workable/ worth porting or are they junk?

is there anything these motors are prone to breaking? any strong or weak points.......?

any good websites and or info is appreciated....!

Go here, either do a search, or register, and ask away... Good luck!

L98 350

Heads: good design can be ported fairly easily. Post 1986 they will be aluminum.

block: cast iron 4bolt mains strong. A good starting point.

Crank: The Vette Crank should be forged steel.

Rods: Cast stock 5.7' length.

Pistons: Hyperretectic, stronger than cast not nearly as strong as forged aluminum. Static CR was 9.5:1

They were rated at 245 horse. The big impediments to this motor making power was the stock throttle body and the upper\lower TPI manifold. Most peole change them out and get 300 hp down. This cam be expensive if you go with a setup like the Stealthram or relatively cheap if you convert to a 4bbl Carb and intake. Stock internals with headwork and s a cam intake swap and you should be able to put down 350+ hp and run deep in the twelves. You can get a rebuild kit from Summit Racing Equipment for $400 or so and pay an extra $150 I think for stage II rods and have a short block that will hold up to 600 hp.

Mars302,

The Vette got the aluminum heads early. The Fbody started the Aluminum heads in 88. The Vette block was a 4 bolt main the Fbody version was a 2 bolt. You are correct in the 245 Hp figure being in te later versions of the L98 but I am assuming that the L98 motor he is refering to is one from later in the production run.
