1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL-1

The 1969 model year of the Corvette ZL1 was offered featuring an all-aluminum 427 cu in big-block engine that claimed to be capable of 430 hp. It propelled the ZL1 down the 1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds.

Automotive experts have long believed that only two were built (yellow and white coupes), however, a third red ZL1 was revealed in December 1969. It was purchased by a Gulf Oil engineer, who still races it occasionally.

Don Sahlman of Tampa Florida owned a new ZL-1 that he referred to as an L89 due to a carb and manifold modification.
Sahlman Seafoods is over near 20th street South of Hwy 60/Adamo Drive.

His L89 had black headers and no black nose stripe.

Don autocrossed it a few times with MacDill Sports Car Club at the Schlitz Brewery (now Yungling) on part of a paved
airport runway, North of Busch Gardens. That runway went for some distance to the East and at one time went as far as 50th Street.
