Default transmission problems

1996 GMC Jimmy, 4.3liter V6. Automatic

When accelerating I get what feels like the truck is missing [I think this is the transmission slipping], and it doesn't want the RPMs go over 2k [it kind of bouces around @ 2k]

Anyone have any experience with this problem? I'm going to call around to some shops this weekend. Just trying to an idea of what I'm looking at?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Greg

How many miles are on the truck? Does it do this in all of the gears? Has the SES light come on anytime recently? It could be a clogged catalytic converter, a bad plug or plug wire, or possibly a clogged fuel filter too. Might want to check those out.

no problems at idle or 1st and 2nd gear. the truck has 150,000 miles. never seen the SES light. The plugs/wires are new.
