I have a 98 trans am, my motor makes a knocking sound at startup, goes away at an idle for the most part. Under higher or sudden rpms the knock becomes more pronounced. Here is link to the video at a cold startup.

stop running the motor now, pull the pan and inspect bearings. probally need a new crank but before it wipes out and oblongs rods fix it and you will have no problem later.

its been my garage ornament for the past five months....i think gm hired some former dsm engineers

rod knock or piston slap. piston slap is common, and sounds a bit similar. if you had a spun rod bearing or something though, you would typically notice a decrease in oil pressure.

hate to tell ya to run the engine anymore than ya need to, but does the "knocking" go away once the car has been brought to operating temp and left there for a few minutes so the oil is also at operating temp?
