Default Question about 97 Cavalier ??

Okay a friend of mine has a 5 speed one of these. And today he was shifting from 1st to 2nd. And as he did that he heard a very loud popping sound. The shifter looks like it's in 2nd but it's still in 1st. The motor drives fine and he road the car home in 1st.

So I thought he might have popped a shifter cable? But i'm not sure if it has cables or rods like a civic.

so if someone could help me out i would be super happy with the help

also any pictures or links showing how to replace this part work be very good thanks for any help that can be given

It won't shift out of first gear.

If it's the shifter cable, how hard is it change?

Any PDF files that i could Download to get an idea of what i need to do to change it.

Sounds like the shifter cables. I had to do mine a few months back. The install isn't too terrible. Basically pop off the cables from the transmission and from the shifter base. Then pull them through the firewall (easier to do it through the interior). Put the new ones through the firewall and hook them up to the tranny. Then hook the other side up to the shifter base again.

Does he have the 2.2L or the 2.4? I have a set of 2.2L cables I can sell him for much cheaper than he will find through the dealer. I am parting out my car as I picked up a new tC in December.

BTW, you can check the cables on the transmission just by popping the hood and seeing if you can manually move the car into gear. you may even be able to see the cable sitting off of the linkage. If not, check to see if they were pulled from the connection to the linkage.
