Approaching a traffic light, I moved powerglide auto trans into
neutral, coasting to a stop, as I have done thousands of
times.

It felt like it went into park, and rear tires screeched. At first
I thought I had moved the shifter too far. I couldn't push the car
at all, but rocked it a few times forward/back..........

Something loosened up and it was pushable.
It also became driveable, but only in reverse. No problem.
Drove it off the road in reverse and into a parking lot.
Thought maybe the trans mount had broken, and the
shift linkage was now; not "long enough" to put trans
into drive.
I unbolted the shift linkage under the hood at the
steering column, and physically pushed the linkage downward
where drive would be. I could feel the detents gripping
as it went through the gears.
I bypassed the "don't start switch" and started the
engine in drive, since I couldn't work the unbolted shift rod.
The car moved about 6 inches forward,
and abruptly stopped as if it had jumped into park.
Tried starting in drive a few more times....car moves
about 6 inches forward and stops abruptly as if it had
jumped into park.
It's driveable in reverse, but that's the only direction.
When I try to put it in drive, it moves about 6 inches and jerks
to a stop like it was just put into park.

Can anyone suggest what I should look for? I thought about
removing the trans pan and seeing if something got hung up
in two places at once,.......but yet it will still go into reverse......
.....so I don't know.....Any ideas?

 

So does anyone know any auto transmission theory?

 

I always wondered if pulling a moving car out of gear harms the tranny, Ive had the same thing happen to me with the shifter getting stuck but i just slammed on the gas and it started rolling again - but then again I have a deathwish and a b2b warranty

 

You can be sure it won't be driven....since it only drives in reverse.
Eventually I'll get the pan off and see if something looks hung up.
