A properly built and maintained V8, especially a stock F-Body, is perfectly reliable. The only reason V8's get a bad rap is because of how much they're beaten on. Let's be honest, if you beat on any engine as much as the 'tards on this board beat on their Camaros/Firebirds/Mustangs, shit's gonna break. Need proof? Go look in the Honda Tech forum. You'll see a lot of broken 4 cylinders in there because they beat the shit out of them.

I'm running a stock 1972 half ton 350 SBC in my Camaro. The only thing I've ever done to it was a full gasket kit since the gaskets rotted from being on the stand too long. It's still on stock bearings and rings!
+100000 aresome point.. unless you own an lt1.. you can baby an lt1 and your opti is still gonna take a shit next time it rains

Its going to be your fault when I go blow 6,000 on a TA or Z28 and have to delay my Mustang project because of it, you realize this, right?

Actually, I really did think that LT1s were teh suck, and I doubt I can afford an LS1. If they're halfway decent (minus the opti, I'll replace the opti immediatly), I might just have to make my DD a V8...What kidn of fuel mileage might I be looking at with that lovely 91 octane gas that goes in them? Anywhere near a 3.4L V6 thats almost always shifting above 3.5k RPMs? I'm figuring, I have to beat on the v8 less to achieve desired acceleration and speed, so that might help?

The LT1 can actually burn 87 octane all day. My OL drives a '96 TA and it has knock sensors. I've never heard 1 ping on 87 octane come out of that thing. Her Opti has 100k miles on it too, it's fine. I dunno what kinda mileage she gets, probably close to 20mpg. I know it's way better than my Caddy and my Camaro though

I think people just jokingly shit talk the LT1. It's actually not that bad, especially for a DD. It's so underpowered that it's pretty hard to hurt it too.

You're better off delaying that Mustang project indefinitely. Fuck Ford!

You gotta dump the V6. Buy an LT1. The LT1 doesn't deserve the crap it gets. Also my '94 still has its stock opti in it. I just jinxed myself I know it.

yeah lt1s are pretty sick budget motors.. the opti problems are blown out of proportion and for the most part, they fail due to user neglegence.. my stock opti lasted 70k miles.. the problem with lt1s is they are computer controlled and when things go wrong it can be hard to pinpoint the problem without diagnostic tools that arent found in the average DIY tool box

Shit, we've got some cheap ass laptop software and a ghetto rigged OBD-II cable that plugs into a serial port. With that shit I can diagnose any OBD-II car with more options than most mechanics have. OBD-II is both a blessing and a curse.

But the Mustang will be oh-so-damn-fast....sigh, still not fun to drive anywhere except in a straight line, though. I just don't see a heavy ass F-Body being as fast as a Fox on a budget. Still, a DD that could get up and go AND take corners would be cool...I'm going to go ahead and assume that Z28s and TAs are the same, except for the TA looking nicer, and the Z28 costs less, right? Guess I'll trade my phoenix in for a bowtie if thats the case.
