I was thinking the same thing when I first got my car. Let me put it this way - your fan doesn't kick in till about 238 - I can't think of any other common engines that run as hot as F-Body engines, they're built to handle the heat, and I've been told that heading the engine so high is quite good for it, as it burns off buildups from the valves and runners and whatnot.

It's because your fans are on the stock settings.
Don't turn off the A/C in traffic, as long as it's on the second fan will be also. Have your fans reprogrammed and a lower temp thermostat.

get ur pcm reprogrammed. stock fan settings are pretty high. my car used to run hot like that all the time too. ever since i did the pcm and 160 stat, it runs cool as hell, even when its hot outside. http://www.madz28.com/
Don't get the wrong idea about this, man. Its healthy for the car to run at those temperatures, and actually not that good for it to run on a 160 degree thermostat. I mean, its like it is for a reason - and that reason is usually reliability over performance.

LT1's are set to run at those temps for emissions reasons only. The LT1 was an evolution of the SBC. AL heads and reverse cooling that flows from the radiator to the heads to the block. The purpose of that is to be able to run a higher compression ratio with out detonation. Getting a properly prepared LT1 to run on pump gas with 12:1 CR can be done with no detonation.
