Default '95 beretta drivers side control arm

a buddy of mine has a '95 beretta, and was told he needs a new control arm. The mechanic moved the arm around with a crowbar to show the play between the arm and the bushing. I don't understand something.. even though he hasn't bent the arm it could still need to be replaced? or is the bushing just bad? I just dont get how his control arm would need to be replaced. the car makes noise when he gets on the brakes and brings the car almost to a stop, he hears a "thunk" noise.

Know where the cheapest place to look would be for a '95 front driver side control arm?

thanks for the help fella's
