Default Pulling OBD 2 codes

Besides a scan tool of some sort is there a way to pull codes from an OBD2 computer?

I know it's possible with OBD1.

i believe autozone still does it for free... i think i still have a link on how to do it, but its at home. ill post it as soon as i can if i find it.
