Default Weaker LS1s

I remember reading that some of the LS1s were weaker than other years. Which years are weaker and what is that makes them weak? Power from the factory or the ability to stand up to mods?

There are no weak LS1's. There are some minor differences between years but nothing that would classify them as weaker. My '98 would be one of the weaker ones. It only dynoed 302 rwhp with a lid and filter.

the 01-02 are slightly stronger with the LS6 intake and slightly revised cam. maybe 7-8 rwhp difference. otherwise, they are all teh same. 298-305 rwhp stock.

That's one thing that sucks about GM. They have some freak cars putting down awesome numbers from the factory but yet some dyno really low. I guess GM went with the "wednesday built" idea on the freak ones. Why is that? -Mark

I wish they were. But I've noticed that the rwhp range is not as wide with the 4.6(don't know about 302) as it is with the GM camp. Not bashing John, just curious. -Mark

ps. My wifes 01'(A4) put down 296/315 w/ lid and maf. Nothing special I guess average. -Mark

Seems to be a pretty wide range (Well, wide for a bolt on 5.0 rangeing from 180-230rwhp), but that's mainly due to tired shortblocks.

the range in ls1 power output is due to the different intake manifolds and cams. the newer ones dont have an egr either.
