If it is a vortec style motor then you might be along the same lines as the ls1 platform. I get so confused over these motors, but if that is the case as any Chevy put a better air filter and air box on it to let the vehicle breathe. Possibly a new maf etc to see what can be done for a few dollars.

basic mods for mild but fun power
pullies
intake and filter
if its a 4x4 a power programmer would be nice
good set of headers and cat-back exhaust to give it some throat
and that should be good enough, not like your trying to make a drag car. just say screw it and throw a 100 shot of NAWZ in it

thanks for the suggestions. i was told that it is pretty much a normal ls1 just with different heads and intake manifold. if thats the case would it be any benefit to go with the heads and manifold off a vette?

thanks

I think the vette heads and intake flow a tiny bit better than its tahoe counterpart,

um from what i know, the vortec is just the designer name GM puts on motors. the 5.7 is an iron block, iron headed LT1 style motor, having nothing to do with an ls1. the only 5.7L GM motors are in the f body and y body cars. the new tahoes/yukons have the 4.8/5.3 platform ls1 derived motor (aluminum headed too). my girl has a 5.3L 03 Yukon. normal boltons can be done to those 5.7 motors like catback, pulleys, and if you want replace with aluminim headed intaked LT1 style stuff. IMO handheld programers do nothing for power.

I am pretty sure Vortecs are standard small block designs (SBC1, SBC II/LT1).

You'll have to find aftermarket Vortec style heads in order to keep your current manifold/fuel injection. Though you could throw any standard head on there with a new induction system, AFR 195s are probably the best best then.

Standard vortec heads max lift is .450, so a bigger cam is out of the question with stock heads. Could do this with reworked heads, I believe that the valve guide seals have to be machined.
