Default Time to get a new car

Hi, first poster here.
Anyways, lets skip all the shit and get straight to the point.
My mom proposed today that I have 8 grand to spend on a new car, my second car.
My first is a 1973 Blazer, 9 inch lift, 38.5 Ground Hawgs, new Edelbrock 350, etc. which is basically my toy.
I get crappy mileage with my beast and thats why my mom offered to buy me a new car.
Im a huge fan of GTI's and volkswagens, but theyre so pricey and its hard to find a cheap one with good miles 'round here..
Anyone has an idea of what I should get, say it, cause right now im pullin blanks.

well obviously you have plans to modify it in some way, but what are your goals for the car, other than to be a daily driver?

do you plan on showing/racing/lil bit of both?

racing 1/4 mile? circuit track? autocross courses? rally? (rally is kinda hard and more risky to try with a daily car)

you seem to like vw's, most of them are fwd. do you prefer fwd or rwd? either will be way different than your truck. even if its rwd or 4x4, it will not be the same.

8 grand can be nothing or alot to work with depending on what you want. you could easily blow all 8 on a reliable car, spend some and use the rest for some mods, or buildup a nice streetcar right as you buy it. set it up before making it roadworthy (this would apply to such things as a swapped car or etc)

oh and welcome! how is the blazer's body condition? those have a reputation to rust in certain areas in the back, right? like around windows?

EDIT - agreed with tom's comments as well.

Well, see, thats the point... this is all so sudden (mom told me yesterday) I have no idea what I want. I want something thats easy to work with, reliable, and if I put a lil work into it, can beat the local ricers that swarm around at night.

I am going to be selling my 95 Mustang GT soon which I will be selling for half of 8k with the money left of it could be running 11's in the 1/4. Sorry just had to put that in I agree you need to decide what you want then decide what is in your price range. You can find a decent car for under 8k foreign or domestic.

Or, I could take that 8k, and use it as a down payment on a new car and have cheap payments...
Hmmmmmmmm, the possibilities.

totally second that ..use about 4 or 5k to buy a really clean one, and use the rest for upgrades
