im an underwriter for progressive insurance. im assuming that by you asking if you should insure the car your meaning full coverage? if you just carry liability and PIP, thats basic coverage, it only pays for the other persons injurys, car, and your injuries.

florida is a no fault state, which means your own insurance has to pay for the first 10 thousand dollars of your injuries, no matter who is at fault. thats why in florida you have to carry PIP.

comp and collision make your policy full coverage, these are the coverages that protect your car only. comp is fire, theft, vandalism, any act of nature(hurricane). collision is if you collide with another car or stationary object.

back to your question, should you have insurance?? yes you should. should you carry full coverage??? this question depends on alot of factors. who is your insurance carrier? how do they rate?

to give you an example, my last crx was a 90 hf. i had bought it for 800 dollars and dropped 3 grand into it. totaled it one month later, and got 1200 dollars. needless to say the car was totally stripped when they took it. they wouldnt cover any of the aftermarket parts, there job is to restore the car to the factory condition. i was really pissed that they only gave me 1200 for my car becuase the blue book on it was 2800 at the time. my company is met life auto, what they do is pull up autotrader.com and find the average value of three crx's in your area, and that's the price they give you. but progressive uses NADA.com for prices, if i had progressive, i would have gotten the 2800 instead of 1200, big difference.

i had full coverage on the crx which was going to cost me 800 every 6 months. they only gave me 1200 for the market value. in this case it is not wise to carry full coverage. but had i been with the company i work for, i would have gotten alot more and it would have been worth it to carry full coverage.

so before you buy insurance, ask the compay how they payout on a total loss. do they use, nada, blue book, or market value. if they say "market value" or anything besides nada or blue book. do not fuck with that company because they will rip you off just like mine did. usually companies that use nada and blue book cost a little more than the "market value" companies, but its well worth it.

if any of you guys need any help in the insurance department, let me know.

if you end up wanting full coverage and have your car hooked up, you can tell the company to cover your car for a "stated amount". this will insure that you get the money you want if your car is totalled. it cost more, but not too much. and its worth it if you're going to drop 5k into it.

It shouldn't go up too much because of it being your second car. You will probably be required to designate one car as your primary vehicle and your second car as your pleasure vehicle. I did that, and my insurance only went up about $20 a month, for full coverage it was only $50/mo. more.
