[h=2]Chevy drivers weigh in on 'mean-looking' Camaro[/h] Thursday, 10 August 2017

Chevrolet unveiled the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 on Thursday, the model it will use in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series beginning next season.
Starting at Daytona International Speedway in February, the ZL1 will replace the Chevrolet SS. The new racecar was an immediate hit with the drivers who were on hand for the announcement at Chevrolet's Detroit headquarters.
Here's what they had to say:
Jimmie Johnson: "Without a doubt [I'm excited to drive a mean-looking car]. Looks are half the battle in racing and it does have that mean look, and I personally love the hood detail and you can see the crossover from the production car to the racecar. Then, just having another shot at refining our racecar. Other manufacturers have been able to refine and resubmit and this is our first with this generation car. We're definitely improving the car's performance on track and we're really excited about the 2018 season."
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: "I think it's a good-looking car and I think a lot of people were hoping that even before the Camaro came into the Xfinity Series that they would bring the Camaro to the Cup Series. This will make Chevrolet fans really happy because this is a car that looks like it could really raise the performance for Chevy."
Alex Bowman: "I think it's awesome, I think it's a great-looking car. The ZL1 is a great car on the street and I think it's going to be a great car on the racetrack as well. I'm really excited about it. I think it's the best looking car that I've probably ever gotten to drive, so I'm excited about that, and really just looking forward to getting to the racetrack with it. ... It's going to be a lot of fun. Obviously, I'm really looking forward to the opportunity of working with Hendrick Motorsports and Nationwide and Axalta and the 88 team, but getting to do that with the Camaro is going to be really special."
Jamie McMurray: "Who's not excited to start the following year? I think what all of us are sitting around wondering is how fast is it going to be? Is it going to be a good [restrictor] plate car? We get to Daytona and you spend two weeks there and you hope it's a good superspeedway package. Then you start your season at all the intermediates and you hope it's a really good downforce car. It's cool that our organization got to be a part of building it, and they've done such an amazing job on our cars this year that you hope they put a little bit of that into this and feel really good about that."

Kyle Larson: "I feel like the car definitely turned out really good. I like [how] the nose looks mean, it looks badass. You get excited about it, you hear about them building it for the last couple months then get to see it, but then you have to wait until February to get to drive it. It's cool, though. For Daytona, you always anticipate how your season is going to be and once you get there and get onto the mile-and-a-half's you can get a better idea of how the car is going to be, but it looks like it's going to be really good; lots of downforce. So, should be exciting."

Chris Buescher: "It's a really cool-looking car. They did a nice job with the development of it. To bring an all-new model back to the Cup Series with the Camaro, it's really nice looking. I think it's got a lot of characteristics that's going to help us on track and it's similar to what the showroom product is."
AJ Allmendinger: "I agree [with Larson that it looks mean]. In the past few years we kind of lost the production look on the racecars and with this new Camaro you look at the front of the racecar itself and you think it's actually a Camaro street car. To me, that's what's going to make it fun for the fans, for the manufacturers, for everything to be able to show, hey, what we're racing on Sunday, you're trying to sell again on Monday. So, get back to that a little bit. Everybody at Chevy has done such a great job producing this car. It looks awesome and probably going to be pretty awesome on the racetrack in 2018."

Chase Elliott: "It looks really good, I'm excited about it. I think everybody at Chevrolet, and at Hendrick [Motorsports] had a large involvement with the car, I think everyone did their homework, which is what we need to do in trying not to just make them go fast but make them look like what we have on the road. For a consumer to go and look at a car and then look at our racecar, there's so many similarities here that if you can't identify with that, then I don't know what you're going to identify with. At the end of the day, that's what people say and that's what people got."
Michael McDowell: "The look's great. Very aggressive styling and from a driver and competitor, I'm thinking about downforce and performance, which we really think the 2018 Camaro will give us, more performance, and that's ultimately what we want. And it also looks a whole lot like the production car as well. Really cool. It's been a while since Chevrolet has had a new body style, and it's been a long time since Camaro has run in the Cup Series, so really exciting for everybody in the Chevrolet family."
Ryan Newman: "I think if you look at the history of automobiles the Camaro has been there a long time and has made its name for sure as a sports car, but in general I think it's going to be cool to see it on the racetrack as a racecar. The history and heritage of that vehicle and how it ties into not just corporate America but family's and people and lifestyle, I think it's a great choice. I definitely applaud Chevrolet for having a vehicle that is authentic as in a racecar that is rear-wheel drive and what we drive on the racetrack is similar in the streets. Not only does it look very similar, it's damn near exact and I look forward to driving it."

Kasey Kahne: "I love it. I think it looks great. It's going to be good on the track, looks really good. To have the Camaro back after so many years is awesome. Another car that is very similar to the street car, to have rear-wheel drive ... I'm excited about it. I think it's pretty cool. I hope I get to drive it. ... If you can do that as a manufacturer (sell what looks like a racecar) it totally helps what we have going on, helps us on the track and off the track. It looks great and consumers are going to want to have it. When it pulled up and Jimmie pulled up to where Dale had pulled up and you have both cars sitting there, the fronts are identical and the rest of the cars is very close. It's a great resemblance."
Ty Dillon: "My first opinion is that it looks fast, so that's always a good thing. I didn't even know until today that it was a Camaro ZL1, which is a sweet car on the streets anyway. I think the resemblance in the racecar and the street car is incredible. I think the fans and the consumers are going to really love that. And then on top of that, I think they did a great job designing this car and it's going to be fast in 2018. I'm looking forward to getting out there in it."
Austin Dillon: "I'm really excited to race it, it looks amazing. The Camaro brand, I have a Camaro myself, and it speaks for itself. I've known the brand for speed and just being bad to the bone, and it looks that way right here. Can't wait to get it on the track."
