1981 Indy 500 May 1981

by andrew sopher

Frank Dalla

Being there and seeing the 500 was something I had only dreamed of, but in 1981, I was finally able to be there. And for 11 days, including race day, I held a pit pass to the infield and was able to roam pit alley and view what only can be imagined if not experienced. I was disappointed by seeing just a select few, perhaps two or three teams that actually had their act together. The rest were just there spending someone else's money. I watched teams wait hours in line to qualify, only to fail because they couldn't get their engines started. I mean, these people, who I had envied all of my life as the best racers ever, couldn't get their engine started? Then I watched as cars were completely dismantled down to the last nut and bolt after just making very good qualifying runs. Many of them had failures of one kind or another during the race. To my thinking, it was insane to do this without any possibility to run the car again before race day. It provided an unnecessary question mark for a car that had just proven it's self worthy. But that's what I saw, and the Indy 500 was never the same for me after being there in 1981.

Dan Gurney’s favorite Indy car was the 1981 Pepsi Challenger, or the Eagle 8100, to give it its official nomenclature.A year earlier, Gurney had turned designer John Ward loose, and the result was a radical, striking piece that didn’t look like anything else in Gasoline Alley – and didn’t work like anything there, either. While others went the conventional ground-effects route, based on venturi tunnels under the car, Ward, plus Trevor Harris, egged on by Gurney’s no-holds-barred mindset for innovation, conceptualized and built a twin-vortex generating body shape which energized flow over the rear wing (aided by exhaust flow – how ahead of its time was that!) and produced significant downforce. Significant.“Dan was all in on getting answers and not at all concerned with conformity,” recalls Ward. “The ground effects or BLAT [Boundary Layer Adhesion Technology], as Dan liked to call it, was inspired by the shed vortices on the top of an F-16 fighter jet wing, which could fly at extremely high angles of attack, hence BLAT. If you turn an F-16 upside down, you have the ’81 Eagle!”Ward made some refinements for 1981 and the 8100 was even zoomier as Mike Mosley stuck it in the middle of Row 1 at Indy, out-pacing the turbo Cosworth DFX hordes with a stock-block Chevy V8.“Dan was extra proud of that engine and it was a great month because I think we surprised a lot of people,” says Ward, who’d created a tenth-scale wind tunnel, complete with rolling road, at Gurney’s All American Racers shop to accelerate their learning curve. “And he was proud of our team – I think we only had 15 or 20 people at AAR and we did the car and engine in-house. Dan loved that car. We all did.”After an engine failure at IMS, Mosley went from last to first and lapped the field to win at the Milwaukee Mile – the final victory for AAR in open-wheel competition and the last time a stock-block pushrod engine scored a victory in Indy car racing.“It was a great car on an oval and a great car on a road course,” said Gurney back in 2013 while poring over photos of Geoff Brabham and Rocky Moran leading races in 1981 at Riverside and Watkins Glen, respectively. “Then the bureaucrats took over and ruled out our car.“An American car with an American engine that won a single race and they were scared of it, so they arbitrarily threw it out. That stuck in my craw for a long time.” Ward will always treasure his time at AAR with The Big Eagle.“Dan so was so curious about how things worked,” he says. “He would always ask the right questions to make you think and he made us feel like we could do anything.” Get the full version of this story in the 2018 Heroes Issue of RACER magazine, on sale now.

1979 Indy 500 First woman driver Janet Guthrie and drag racer Danny Ongais

I'd say war #1. And this was brutal. First IMS refused the entries of the CART teams who filed a lawsuit to get in(and won) Then the whole mess in qualifying with the allegations of selective rule enforcement over pop off valve use. That's why there was a 35 car field for this race. IMS held a special qualifying session and if any car had a faster average than the slowest qualifier they were allowed entry. Two cars did so. After this race IMS made certain to let it be known that the 500 was invitation only from the next year forward.

There was a reason why the taped broadcast of the race ended with a segment that was done live just before 10 P.M. Eastern time: Most of the commentary of the taped and edited race by Jim McKay and Jackie Stewart was done while the edited tape was being broadcast. However, the commentary at the start of the telecast, the start of the race, the first few laps, the last few laps and the finish were recorded at the time the events were taking place. The middle of the race was originally taped without commentary. This was standard procedure for ABC's same-day taped telecasts of the Indy 500's in the 1970's and early 1980's. It was just easier for the taped and edited race broadcast to be produced that way. Had the entire race been shot "live-on-tape" and shown in a three-and-a-half-hour-plus broadcast that night, then all the commentary would have been recorded as the race was happening.

My first race! I was sitting with my Dad in H Grandstand and I was 7 years old.The main thing I remember was Al Unser getting black flagged and me asking Dad what the black flag meant.I can still see the trail of smoke coming from the back of that beautiful car. Also,it was a GORGEOUS day which you can only partially discern from this video. It had rained most of the night before but the clouds parted just in time for the race.

There is a neat story in the Indy 500 yearbook from that year about Gerald Ford attending and him being the first former or current Chief Executive to attend the race.He had written off seeing the race when he had peeked out at 2 a.m. from his hotel room and it was raining and miserable. But as I said, the clouds broke up right on cue.

I was there. Just got out of the USAAF that year and took my dame, Gertrude. We had a grand time. Took a selfie with Rex Mays before the race. After Robson won, we let the auto traffic clear the old girl for awhile, and Gertrude and I made whoopie under an old oak tree there near that second corner. A police man ran us off and we made haste to leave before we got thrown into the hooskow. Ended up at a Steak & Shake that evening, then went home and rewatched the race as I had DVRed it.
