INDYCAR Hinchcliffe, 5th in points, bumped out of the race
2.3k sharessharetweetemail
By: Robin Miller May 20, 2018 3:06 PMCan you imagine the Daytona 500 without one of the Busch brothers or Chase Elliott? Wouldn’t happen. Couldn’t happen. NASCAR has a provision to protect all its full-timers. It’s called the Charter System and it guarantees full-time license holders automatic entrance into every race for nine years.IndyCar is facing the reality of running the 102nd Indianapolis 500 without one of its most popular and productive drivers. James Hinchcliffe (pictured above), who currently sits fifth in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings, is on the sidelines after being bumped Saturday. So the question is: should IndyCar protect its stars and its full-time teams so they can’t miss the biggest race in the world?“It’s probably something that IndyCar needs to look at,” said Bobby Rahal, who along with David Letterman and Mike Lanigan fields two full-time entries for son Graham and 2017 Indy winner Takuma Sato. “You know NASCAR would have never run Daytona without Fireball Roberts or Buddy Baker because Bill France wouldn’t have allowed it.“I know we all wanted to see bumping again but now one of the series biggest names is on the sidelines. So maybe we need a re-think.”
Bobby Rahal (Image by LAT)
Mark Miles, president and CEO of Hulman & Company, was asked if he had any second thoughts about the current qualifying procedure after Hinch was knocked out.“I thought it was a great day,” he said. “The fans got a lot and ABC got a lot. But in a couple weeks, after all this has died down, I think we’ll sit down and talk about it.” Rahal knows all about the agony of defeat at Indy. He was bumped in 1993 but opted not to buy his way back into the lineup despite having Miller Beer as his loyal sponsor.“I think John Menard offered us a car but it was too much money and we just took our lumps and moved on,” said the 1986 Indy winner. “Five days later Miller came to Columbus (Ohio) and gave me a three-year extension.“The next year we were in danger of missing the race again so we got a car and engine from Roger (Penske) and Miller didn’t care what kind of car or engine we had, they just wanted to be in the race.” To his credit, Hinchcliffe was taking the high road on Sunday when asked if he would be in the race.“There obviously has been a precedent in the past of people jumping into other cars, but at the end of the day, a single, one-race deal is occupied here by someone that worked their tail off all year long to get the sponsorship together, to get the team in line. This is their race, this is everything for the for the entire season. It’s hard to talk someone out of that.“It’s not even my decision – I’ve got no say in it at this point, I do what I’m told. I certainly see both sides of the argument. We didn’t get the job done yesterday, so if it means we don’t get to race, so be it.”

Aero: The 1981 Eagle - ‘An Upside Down F-16’

The 1981 Eagle - ‘An Upside Down F-16’

sharetweetemail
By: Paul Fearnley 5 hours ago

Dan Gurney’s favorite Indy car was the 1981 Pepsi Challenger, or the Eagle 8100, to give it its official nomenclature.A year earlier, Gurney had turned designer John Ward loose, and the result was a radical, striking piece that didn’t look like anything else in Gasoline Alley – and didn’t work like anything there, either. While others went the conventional ground-effects route, based on venturi tunnels under the car, Ward, plus Trevor Harris, egged on by Gurney’s no-holds-barred mindset for innovation, conceptualized and built a twin-vortex generating body shape which energized flow over the rear wing (aided by exhaust flow – how ahead of its time was that!) and produced significant downforce. Significant.“Dan was all in on getting answers and not at all concerned with conformity,” recalls Ward. “The ground effects or BLAT [Boundary Layer Adhesion Technology], as Dan liked to call it, was inspired by the shed vortices on the top of an F-16 fighter jet wing, which could fly at extremely high angles of attack, hence BLAT. If you turn an F-16 upside down, you have the ’81 Eagle!”Ward made some refinements for 1981 and the 8100 was even zoomier as Mike Mosley stuck it in the middle of Row 1 at Indy, out-pacing the turbo Cosworth DFX hordes with a stock-block Chevy V8.“Dan was extra proud of that engine and it was a great month because I think we surprised a lot of people,” says Ward, who’d created a tenth-scale wind tunnel, complete with rolling road, at Gurney’s All American Racers shop to accelerate their learning curve. “And he was proud of our team – I think we only had 15 or 20 people at AAR and we did the car and engine in-house. Dan loved that car. We all did.”After an engine failure at IMS, Mosley went from last to first and lapped the field to win at the Milwaukee Mile – the final victory for AAR in open-wheel competition and the last time a stock-block pushrod engine scored a victory in Indy car racing.“It was a great car on an oval and a great car on a road course,” said Gurney back in 2013 while poring over photos of Geoff Brabham and Rocky Moran leading races in 1981 at Riverside and Watkins Glen, respectively. “Then the bureaucrats took over and ruled out our car.“An American car with an American engine that won a single race and they were scared of it, so they arbitrarily threw it out. That stuck in my craw for a long time.” Ward will always treasure his time at AAR with The Big Eagle.“Dan so was so curious about how things worked,” he says. “He would always ask the right questions to make you think and he made us feel like we could do anything.” Get the full version of this story in the 2018 Heroes Issue of RACER magazine, on sale now.

Power's fresh approach pays off at Indy

230 sharessharetweetemail
By: Mark Glendenning May 27, 2018 3:37 PM Determination, a negativity filter and a few aggressive restarts combined to help take Will Power into Victory Lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.Power survived a race-long threat from Ed Carpenter and a late-race battle with a trio of off-sequence cars to secure Team Penske’s 17th Indy 500 win. At the final restarted, he had the fuel-marginal Oriol Servia, Stefan Wilson and Jack Harvey ahead of him, with Scott Dixon and Carpenter just behind. Carpenter and Power were on identical fuel loads, and Power said that the race polesitter was his main concern.

“That last restart, I was very determined,” he said. “I knew that I had to get a run on these [off-sequence] guys, at least get one of them in the first turn – which I didn’t. I got Oriol a lap later or something. I didn’t want Carpenter to have a shot at me. He was very quick. If he had gotten by, I think it would have been game over, potentially.”

Once he got past Servia he had just three laps left to deal with Wilson and Harvey, but that problem took care of itself when both drivers swung into pitlane for a late splash of fuel, giving Power a clear run to the flag.“It was like the gates opened,” Power said. “It was amazing.”But beyond how the day played out on the track, Power believes that the seeds for the win were planted with a change in his outlook, partly with regard to how he processed the disappointment of narrowly losing the 2015 race to teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, and partly through a desire to be more positive in general.“There’s so much negative stuff out there you can see on social media,” he said. “You’ve just got to minimize the amount of negative people you hang around, negative stuff you read, and be in general more positive.“It ran through my head the last year more than ever, because I’ve won so many races and poles, led more laps than anyone… I just hadn’t done it here,” he said. “I’ve been thinking, ‘Am I going to finish my career without a 500 win?’“This month was one of the best months I’ve had: very relaxed, in tune with my engineer, just working really well. It just came together. You’ve got to have a lot of determination.“I watched the Super Bowl. It was the Patriots…what was the other team? [ED: The Eagles]. They had a lot more ‘want’. They wanted it more than the other team. That’s why they won. I think you have to have that. You have to have that in you. That’s just the human spirit. You got to have that determination. That’s what I had. You work hard at something, it comes to you. It eventually comes to you.“This was the last box to tick to be considered as a very successful driver. I’m not done. I’m not done. I still have plenty of time left to win more 500s and championships and races.”

A bit of Indianapolis HistoryI had posted photographs of every INDY 500 winner since the beginning.
They got deleted under TR's new format MAY 2018..
That's not good.

I apologize to the writers doing racing research. It was not my doing.-Bob

RETRO: The untold story of the 1968 Indy 500

332 sharessharetweetemail
By: Robin Miller May 26, 2018 8:44 AM The 1968 Indianapolis 500 will forever be remembered by most as the race where the turbine failed for the second straight year – just a few miles from the checkered flag. But the untold stories were the dominance of winner Bobby Unser, and another strong run of Lloyd Ruby that ended in frustration.A year after Parnelli Jones came within six laps of winning in Andy Granatelli’s turbine, the bombastic owner with STP sponsorship returned with a three-car armada of turbines.Joe Leonard won the pole at a record speed of 171.559 mph and teammate Graham Hill sat next to him, with Unser rounding out the front row in his conventional Offenhauser engine. And while Leonard was leading with 10 laps to go before breaking down, he hadn’t driven away from the pack like everyone expected. Unser and Ruby were quicker most of the afternoon.“I thought I could run with them [turbines], but honestly I didn’t think I could out-run them,” said Unser on the 50-year anniversary of his first Indy 500 triumph. “But of course I didn’t know the mistake they made before the race started. And that changed everything.”
Leonard leads Johnny Rutherford. Image by IMS

Unser claims (and it was confirmed by Leonard before he passed away last year) that instead of sticking with the aviation fuel that the turbines qualified with, Granatelli switched to gasoline after getting $100,000 from Standard Oil. It was big money for those times, but turned out to be costly.“That cost Joe and the other cars [Hill and Art Pollard] horsepower,” said Unser. “And I knew early in the race I was faster than him, but I didn’t know why.”On Lap 8, after Leonard led the first seven circuits, Unser passed him on the main straightaway (“I waited because I wanted to do it in front of Andy,” he laughs) and proceeded to drive away to a 6.0s lead.“I purposely stayed behind him [Leonard] the first few laps because I wanted to see how my car was handling,” he said. “Then I thought, ‘this is stupid,’ so I went around him and then waited on him to come storming back by because I figured I’d pissed him off. But he started getting further away in my mirrors, and I wondered what the hell was going on. “He wasn’t standing on the gas, at least I didn’t think he was, and I couldn’t figure out why.”From that point on it was a battle between Unser and Ruby, with Leonard not that much of a factor. Unser kept his Rislone Eagle on point from laps 8-56, 90-112 and 120-165, while Rube was out in front for laps 57-89 and 166-174.The pivotal point of the race came on Lap 162. Unser lapped third-placed Leonard, and was about to do the same to Ruby when he pitted for the third and final time on lap 166. But his transmission had eaten all but fourth gear and it took forever to get back to speed, so he re-entered the race in third place. On Lap 174, Ruby held a two-second lead on Leonard and six on Unser when the coil failed on his Gene White Mongoose and he crawled into the pits. When Carl Williams pounded the wall and caught fire on lap 183, the field slowed and there were five lapped cars between Leonard and Unser.

When the green waved for the final time on Lap 191, Leonard accelerated but nothing happened, and he coasted into the Turn 1 infield with a busted fuel shaft while the crowd roared as Unser resumed command.“I really didn’t need that caution because I knew I would have caught Joe, I was just that much better,” said the three-time Indy winner who finished 53 seconds ahead of runner-up Dan Gurney, the man he would win number two for in 1975. “Ruby gave me a hard time all day, and I really had to work to out-run him. “Joe would have been unbeatable if they would have left the fuel alone. But they didn’t, and it turned out to be my day.”

25 years on from Big Al's last Indy 500

By: Marshall Pruett May 26, 2018 10:35 AM Al Unser’s run in the 1993 Indianapolis 500 would come to represent a milestone for the Speedway’s most successful drivers. A.J. Foyt, the first member of the four-time winner’s club, was entered in the 1993 race and took part in practice before deciding to retire on May 15 with a single tear-filled lap. Rick Mears, the last member of Indy’s most exclusive club, retired in December of 1992.It left Unser, the second four-timer and last active driver among the trio of Indy titans, to represent the group in what would prove to be his farewell to the 500. In a span of six months, all of Indy’s four-time winners would close their respective chapters at the Brickyard.Twenty-five years on, “Big Al” took a walk down Gasoline Alley to share memories from his last hurrah with Kenny Bernstein’s King Racing team.“John Menard decided in the beginning of ’93 to put another guy in charge of his racing activities,” he said of the change from Menard Racing to the King program. “And he never was involved in racing whatsoever, so him and I didn’t get along right away. I just decided not to run for him, and then I called Kenny Bernstein, because Kenny had called me and asked me if I would [drive], and I told him [no]. Then when this happened [with Menard], then I called Kenny back and said, ‘Is that ride still open?’ He said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Well, here I am.’ So then that’s how I got hooked up with Kenny, and Kenny put a big effort towards it.”Unser’s No. 80 Lola-Chevrolet turbo V8 wasn’t blessed with speed in qualifying. The legend, teamed with Roberto Guerrero and Jim Crawford in King’s three-car effort, would start 31st. Crawford, in 30th, was in a similar predicament. Guerrero, the 1992 Indy 500 polesitter for Bernstein, could only manage 17th, which spoke to the general performance downturn at play.Race Day was a different tune as chassis setup improvements gave Unser –one day after his 54th birthday — a chance to shine.“We would’ve finished very well,” he added. “The motor went sour; I could’ve won the race, but everybody says that. But I was in contention. I was running third or fourth, if I remember right, and I was right where I wanted to be towards the end of the race. Then we made a fuel stop, and when we came off the fuel run, when the green came out, the thing started missing. That did it. They just all went by me like I was parked.”The four-timer would plummet to 12th at the finish, one lap down to Team Penske’s Emerson Fittipaldi who joined the two-time winner’s club. Unser still laments the outcome.“The Speedway, it’s a jewel to me, you know?” he said. “It’s something that I think anybody that runs there — I don’t know about most of the young drivers today… [but] that place has the finesse that you have to go after. It sometimes smiles on you and sometimes fails on you, so you never know exactly what’s going to happen, and it’s a difficult place. You think you got it made there sometimes, and sure enough, something goes wrong at the end, as it did in ’93. I still think we could’ve won the race, but you can’t win it on seven cylinders.”Determined to go out on a high, Unser tried to add one more chapter to his Indy career in 1994 with the Arizona Motorsports team. A small outfit by comparison to the rest, Unser’s quest for a fifth ring came to a quiet end after a slow qualifying run that was waved off.“There comes a time in your career or your life that you know that you’re not happy or you’re not competitive,” he said. “Plus I wasn’t with a good team that year, and the team just wasn’t producing, and I wasn’t … I don’t think I was driving like I should’ve been driving, see? I put myself out there on the apron watching Al [Jr] qualify, and I looked at myself and I said, ‘What am I doing? What is this about, Al?’ You know, talking to myself.“I just said, ‘Well, you don’t have the desire nor the will to go after it anymore. You need to quit.’ I always said that when it comes time for you to quit or retire, you’ll know it. I just looked at myself and said, ‘It’s time.’ So I went in and told them, ‘I’m going to retire. I’m quitting,’ and I made a promise to myself that I would never come back, and I have lived up to that.” Unser says it doesn’t feel like a quarter-century has passed since he was hurtling into Turn 1 at Indy.“I think it feels like yesterday, but I know when I retired in ’94, every year after that for a long time, I would get very excited during Indy time. Now I don’t,” he admitted. “Now I just take it for granted, you know? I still want to watch the race on TV, and when I can go there, I still want to go there and watch it because I still get excited in a different way.”
