I’m sort of having a mild obsession with speed this week. Obviously, Hennessey’s Venom F5 is going to be one of the fastest cars in the history of ever. That’s cool bro, but have you ever heard of the 9ff GT9-R? No? Well take a moment and let me tell you about it.
Built in 2008 by now-famed German tuning house 9ff, the GT9-R was planned to be a world record speed car from the beginning. Like the Venom, the GT9-R was based off the platform of another car, too — the Porsche 911 — but given a full makeover with boatloads more power. I mean, a lot.

Under the hood was a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six that pushed out an earth-shattering 1,120 horsepower. That much power in a car as light as a 911 was definitely a dangerous thing. And I mean dangerous in the most fun way possible.
9ff’s original goal for the car was 257 mph. That would have made it tied for the fastest car in the world title of 2008 alongside the 257 mph SSC Ultimate Aero. But alas, there was never actually any proof that the GT9-R ever went that fast, nor was it world record certified. Meaning the Ultimate Aero kept its crown for a short while until Bugatti came along and snatched it up.
While 9ff did manage to produce 20 examples of the car with the 1,120 horsepower engine affixed, that quirky design and creatively powerful engine never really got a chance to stand up against the likes of SSC and Bugatti, which is unfortunate.
As of 2013, the company is still clinging to life in the middle of bankruptcy hearings. Whether it will ever produce a world record supercar — or any car, for that matter — will remain to be seen.
