I love watching the pit stops on these old races. About a dozen pumps on the jack handle to raise the car, fuel in what looks to be the same kind of cans I use for my lawnmower, adding oil, half-minute stops being amazing. I love the old NASCAR where they raced cars bought off dealer showrooms and running engines you could buy from the factory. STOCK cars -- yeah, buddy!

This was from "Wide World Of Sports", and I suspect it was the second time they taped and broadcast (via an edited videotape) the Daytona "500". I suspect the race was telecast the following weekend. The play-by-play commentator was Bill Flemming; in the pits was Chris Economaki, who for decades was a pit reporter for various auto racing telecasts, usually on ABC. Economaki was also editor of an auto racing magazine called National Speed Sports News.

Fred Lorenzen wins the 1965 Daytona 500 during the first ever rain shortened 500. The hemi engine that was so dominant during the 1964 Daytona 500 was banned by NASCAR after a number of deaths during the 1964 season. As a result of the ban, Chrysler boycotts the Daytona 500 and many stars including Richard Petty were absent from the race. Fred Lorenzen is able to hold off Marvin Panch as the two drivers get together just as the caution flag falls for rain on lap 129.

Richard Petty becomes the first repeat winner as he wins the 1966 Daytona 500. The hemi ban that was instituted by NASCAR was lifted late in the 1965 season and Richard Petty was back to his old ways at Daytona. The race was mired with tire trouble as the ever increasing speeds were causing the tires to chunk up due to the heat. For back to back years the race was shortened due to rain with Petty taking the checkered flag on lap 198.

I still have this on video when it originally aired. The first "old race" I ever saw. Back in the early 90's there was no internet to get You Tube or order DVDs of old races. Back then you just got lucky to see old clips during races, and read books

Mario Andretti wins the 1967 Daytona 500. The cold conditions caused a lack of grip on the track causing a number of cars to spin out throughout the day. Of the 50 cars that started, only 18 were running at the finish. Andretti was able to miss all the wrecks and defeated his teammate Fred Lorenzen who finished second.

Richard Petty captures his third Daytona 500 win ahead of Buddy Baker, giving Petty Enterprises a 1-2 finish. This was the first Daytona 500 where restrictor plates were mandated for all cars running greater than a 358 cubic inch engine. The restricted speeds didn't prevent one of the most spectacular crashes from occurring in Daytona 500 history when Maynard Troyer suffers a series of barrel rolls early in the race. Dick Brooks pilots the only winged car in the field and drives his Dodge Daytona to a 7th place finish. This would be the last NASCAR event to feature the aerodynamic winged cars.
