octane questions/theory

All my motorcycles ran best on 87, 93 made them sluggish as nuts, and the pipes were getting hot because the damn flame front was still burning when the exhaust valves opened...bad mojo.

so then, the guys who just pay for race gas at the track with daily driven cars are really wasting their time and money?

as the chances of them having actually tuned their car with higher octane gas is relatively small.

anyone with more knowledge on this, continue to post.

Unless they have a power adder that they are turning up at the track, yes, they are wasting their money. A lot of people have a misperception that 100+ octane is going to serve them better than good pump gas will.

Some guys with supplimental injectors on their cars will run a seperate tank of high test for those injectors so their octanes will dynamically change when they really need it.

If the installing an extra tank, pump and plumbing was not so expensive and difficult I would concider it as a highly beneficial mod.

dont wanta change the topic, but the higher the octane the cleaner the burn - less emissions......but dot or epa say diesal is a cleaner burnning fuel than gas.....how can that be if gas is 93 oct when diesal is something like 65 oct?

Wrong on both counts. Octane doesn't really effect the emissions of the fuel (assuming that we are not looking at some of the things that have been used to adjust octane like lead) and diesel is far from a clean buring fuel, though the pollutants it creates are very different from those produced by gasoline.

Perhaps what you are referring to are some of the new low sulphur diesel fuels and the fact that a diesel can have low emissions due to the fact that all diesels burn lean by design and have a high BSFC.

heh I'm just mad i made myself look like a dumbass ROFL, but your right mr2... usually the guys on race gas are tuning to the LIMMMMMIIITTTT and their EGT's are high enough to melt the factory castings...
