Default Old Camry needs hard to find tires. Where might I find some?

Hey,

I have a 20 year old Camry and I've been looking for for a decent set of used tires for it. I'd love to find a full set of 4 but I will go matching pair for the front and matching pair for the back if I have to.

Toyota specs for call for 195/70/14, but I figure I can go 185-205/65-70/14 depending what's out there and available as long as the size matches on all 4.

Any suggestions on where to look for these? Used 14s are a bitch to find. In the last week or so I have had four stores tell me they had them.

One of them had a set of four that had BADDDDDD dry rot and of course, when I said they were rotten they tried to sell me a new set at a real high price. (sigh).

And the other three stores pulled the ol,' "Shit bro, I just sold those 14s I had like10 minutes ago and I feel bad. I'll give you a great price on a new set." (double sigh).

And all three stores were selling Chinese "BCS" tires. Yeah, the price was decent BUT it felt like you could shove a goddam toothpick through the sidewalls. (triple sigh)

Do any of you guys see any problems of going outside the specs as long as all four tires are the same size? Looks like I may have to do it. Good used 195/70/14s are proving real hard to come by.

Thanks,

Mickey

Uh, thanks for the advice. If I could afford new, I'd buy new.

But, if you buy used tires right, they'll last a hell of a lot longer than a month. You don't happen to sell new tires, do you? Or maybe your daddy or mommy does?

My wife's car has a matched set of Continental ContiProContacs on it. I bought 'em USED, balanced and mounted for $160. It's a decent tire.

We've had them for about 3 months. I just took the tread gauge to them and all 4 have just a bit more than 7/32 of an inch of tread on them.

They come with 10/32 of tread NEW and run more than $500, balanced and mounted for a set, depending where you get them.

Do the math, bro.

But thanks for the advice. I'm sure it was well intentioned.

NOW, does anyone have a lead on where I can maybe find these tires?

And do any of you guys see any problems with going outside the specs as long as all four tires are the same size?

Do you see any problems with a size range of 185-205//65-70//14?

Thanks again,

Mickey

I guess no one has a shop to suggest that might have some.

But maybe we can at least answer this question:

Seems to me youre trying to infer Im a kid or have a parents bought car, lol

kids buy used tires, just like I did when I was a kid. I'd pay $15 or $20 for one and would be replacing it anywhere from 2 - 6 months.

If your idea was SO GREAT everyone would be buying used tires, and you wouldn't have a problem finding them. I have no way of gauging how well these tires work out for you, but Im willing to bet you're losing in the long run. That is unless youre unemployed and your time is worth absolutely nothing.

When I was a cheapskate (kid), if the shop I went to didnt have them for me at the time I'd run around to dealerships in the area and see if they had any, usually they did. Sounds to me like you cant play that game anymore with 14".

I think you mean "imply," not "infer." But either way, you are wrong.

You seem real "anti" used tire and I wondered if someone in your family sold new tires. That's what I asked you. I didn't imply squat.

And I am beginning to infer something about you, though.

People who are hurting for money buy used tires, not just "kids."

You make no sense, Jon.

You are contradicting yourself. Lots of people are buying used tires and that's exactly why I'm having trouble finding the ones I need.

Every place I talk to says this size rarely stays in a store for more than a day or two.

Fuck off. If you want decent tires, save up 3 months worth of your McDonald's pay checks and buy new. Quit being a dick to the only person who attempted to assist you.

The reason why you're having problems finding used tires is because cars don't come with 14s anymore. I had 14s on my old Cutlass. I didn't drive it much so when I blew a tire I said screw it and tried to buy used. They just aren't out there. I work at a dealership so we have tons of used tires. Still couldn't find any. The fact is manufacturers are running 16s and up on nearly every car now. 14s are a thing of the past. You could try a place like Bob Lee's. I believe he sells used tires.

14s are so fucking hard to find, just buy a set from Wal-Mart like the Douglas tires.
