i took two years of schooling to learn all of that, you cant just teach it in a simple paragraph. what exactly do you want to know? this is such a broad question.

The only way to ever learn about anything is jumping in and doing it. You can read all you want, doesnt mean anything really till you do it. I went to school for it for a few years and spent most of the time in the shop than a classroom.

I agree with Kyle It takes experience not reading but if you wanna do some reading I guess try Howstuffworks and type in car engine, then ask your friends or try to get to know someone who knows cars and ask if they can help you. You could always try and get a Job in a shop sweeping floors and stuff and see if they can show you some hands on stuff.

Well, under the hood there is typically this carpeteque looking thing attached to the bottom of the hood with little tabs. What it's there for is when the engine catches fire, the tabs melt quickly and drop the carpeteque thing onto the engine to smother the flames and give occupants ample time to escape.
And that's all there is to know about under the hood, the engine and drive train system is a lot more complex though. I'd recommend a school or a few good books if you're that interested.
