Default Someone Asks About Power Steering Removal

Re: Honda Question.
This question was not asked in Honda Tech or it would be answered in Honda Tech.
I invite everyone here to check out TR's tech forums. There is some good info there.

....and for readers who like to complain about life, if you quit reading things that you don't like, it might be better for your mental health.....

It is of general car interest based on car conversations at car meets and this forum is about general car chat. Some people want an extremely clean engine compartment
and they remove everything, do wire tucks, etc......as well as remove a/c and power steering.

Senor Honda Replies.......
With power steering, removing only the belt means a person is pushing the fluid through the lines backwards and it creates a lot of friction. That's why people think they have to have power steering.

Removing the belt AND draining the pump means there is no fluid to push through the lines
and therefore no friction of forcing fluid through the lines.

When I removed my entire pump, lines, belt....reservoir, everything....... 5 years ago and made a lightweight blockoff plate to keep dirt out, I can still steer my car with one finger.............

The steering rack is not affected. It still works well as it has done for many years without power steering.. Some people will try to say that the power steering fluid lubricates the rack. For people who believe that, they have no explanation as to why no fluid leaks out when you remove and replace a steering boot.
Steering racks are lubricated by grease. Small cars don't need power steering.

In the 60's not all Big American cars had power steering. VW Beetles were similar in size to Honda's and had no power steering, either.

For the A/C, belt removal stops it from doing anything more than being weight on the car. I have done a few "A/C delete" conversions for people who wanted to save the weight.-Bob

Hope this answers your question.

Have a great day!

Subject: Honda Question.

Hello bob. I read your post ona forum about removing the ps pump. I have a honda accord coupe 2003. I was thinking of bypassing the ps pump and the ac compressor. If i do renove the ps pump from the belt path what happens to the steering rack? Will it be okay? Can i still drain the ps pump fluid?

Thanks!

A) This goes in Honda-Tech. Not GCC
B) No one cares about your emails between you and your lover.

Stop writing to yourself, plus this isn't Honda tech.

because it's a bit more involved than what senor has written, if you go buy just what he wrote, you stand a good chance of having your rack seize up on you one day
