Lets talk about machine shops
Ok, so I was recently f'ed over by a local machine shop (going to mention names, United Speed World, on Florida Ave.) I simply asked them to do a routine decking of the block, honing of the cylinders, hot-tanking, and install of new freeze plugs. I drop of a block one day. I forgot the mains, silly me. Anyways I inform the machinist that ill be dropping off the mains in two days, being that I have school tomorrow and cant make it. So the next days rolls around, i'm stuck in work, then head straight to school. The day after that, before work I make sure to have the mains, caps, and all hardware in the back of the car ready for drop off after work. Mid-day slowly rolls around, and I receive a phone call but have to take a message. Message -Hey bud, your block & crank is wrapped and ready to go. Let us know when your ready to pick it up.
OK wait a minute. Any reputable machine shop knows, THEY NEED THE MAINS FOR ANY WORK ON THE LOWER END. Why, some might ask? Its simply, say they deck the block with no load on the lower end due to no mains being installed and torqued to spec. Once I go to reassemble my bottom end, the load from the mains is going to take the perfect deck and bend it out of shape. Causing my metal head gasket to say, bye bye to any compression the motor may make on start up.
So back the point, this isn't to say OH THESE GUYS DO CRAPPY WORK. Not at all, the hot-tanking of the block, perfect. The install of the new freeze plugs, just like new. The hone could have been a little better. But its still Ok.
Its just little things like this, then doing the work when you know the one thing you need to have to do the work correctly you don't have. Then not only to you let me walk out of the shop with a motor that had work incorrectly done. You feed me lies, just to get me to leave?
So if anyone else has ever had any machine work done, and it not work out, I want to hear about it. Lets keep names out of this just to protect the innocent (but if you want us to know). Even though they probably know what they are doing.

well i went to pete shop a few years ago and they sucked ass with there staff BUT ever since they moved locations and carter gives awesome customer care and i gave them another shot me and my brother been going there ever since
So good work should go unrecognized and crappy work unpunished?
You should really include the name of the shop- its not that big of a deal that a stupid mistake happened, since they happen every day. It is a bigger issue that they didn't make it right.

So how much warping does the block surface have when the mains are torqued?

My block with ARP mains, will warp up to .007 thou. Which is way to much for a metal heard gasket to seal properly.
You would be correct.
Done and done.
Mine occurred last Friday.
