Is it legal in this state to have a dash cam/some camera recording your driving as you drive around? I know you can't tape/film a convo with a cop (shows how much we can trust them), but can you just film traffic as your driving around? And possibly use it in court to prove your innocence ("running" a red, hitting a dog, etc)?

 

I believe it is legal as long as it doesnt obstruct your view. Prob wouldnt hold up in court though, they would come up with some excuse to question its validity. Unless it showed the actual act being argued like someone pulling out or walking in front of you. It would be real hard to use it for redlight running tickets though. Ive thought about installing one also.

 

i'm sure it falls into that grey area. You can take pictures and video tape pretty much anything that you want. But you can get into a spot if you are trying to use it as evidence to something and you can see other people's faces and all of that.
Audio recording is actually a bigger deal than video recording.

Cops have camera's mounted to their dashes. So they can't be too too illegal.

 

recording of sound without someones knowledge is the problem. If you put some stickers around the car as a warning of recording audio and video, that will help. Also, if you have a run in with the police, it would be in your best interest to immediately explain to them that you are recording video and audio. If they don't want to be recorded, they'll tell you, and you should turn the microphone off. They can not tell you to stop taking pictures or recording video (just a bunch of pictures anyways).

 

Not all cops have cameras in theirs cars. There isn't enough budget to camera equip all cruisers

 

They pretty much all have cameras in their cop cars they just don't always have them rolling

 

^cop cameras start recording about 1 minute before the red and blues come on, they work on a continuous loop deal. just a lot of them have "errors" when any footage might assist you instead of them

my track rat has a camera system one front, one rear, one for each side, and one on the gauges. i guess i could run that on the street and see how much trouble i get out of (more like how much more i get into )

 

I believe I am allowed to collect evidence for my own defense
in case I should be falsely accused. The recording device
should be in the trunk.

Some people aim the camera out the rear window.

Some people have a ceiling mounted camera on the passenger side
(with sound) aimed at the driver side should they need to create a transcript
of conversation to be used in their own defense should they be falsely accused.

As the officer is not required to notify me that he is collecting evidence....
picture or sound, I may not be required to notify him that I'm collecting
evidence for my own defense. Do you want him illegally telling you not to

I have seen in Tampa what appears to be a continuously running camera
in TPD cars.

 

damn sanford airport police have 4 cameras. one in all 4 corners under the rednblues and he watches them on his screen. i dont see why us doing the same would matter. i would never let them know i am taping. stating that you are taping might cause problems, atleast youll know if he gets mad that you are, you know hes up to something unlegit
